Terror, duckies, paid Orthodoxy, 'girl' soldiers

In which we wonder about a suicide bombing, the level of Lake Kinneret, paying students to learn Torah and female soldiers

The horror, the horror

Four more lives have been taken; four more families have been destroyed.

Now the analyzing begins - politicians and activists from left, right, and center have already come out of the woodwork to further their agenda on the back of Friday’s tragedy; citizens will say the sense of normalcy they had felt in recent months has been shattered.

For the families of those who were killed (and injured) in the Tel Aviv suicide bombing, the imminent political and military developments the attack will set off are of no importance right now.

Their world has collapsed, their loved ones are gone, and even Father Time cannot fully heal the scars they will carry with them for as long as they live.

It seems that the multitude of fatal terror and military-related incidents in the region have devalued human life.

The drill is familiar; the average Israeli can tell something terrible has happened just by listening to the ambulances racing down the street, which immediately prompts the instinctive response to turn on one of the local news channels and see live pictures from the carnage.

The responses are entirely predictable (on both sides), the initial shock subsides after a day or two, and things pretty much go back to their normal abnormality.

So before everybody puts in their two cents regarding the latest suicide attack and its effect on the Sharm summit agreements, let’s take a moment (or even two) to at least attempt to comprehend the pain and anguish this insane reality entails.

Tomorrow we can all go back to watching sports and reality TV, I promise. (Dan)

Rubber duckie, you're so fun

The level of Lake Kinneret, the Sea of Galilee, is a national obsession - and for good reason:

Droughts in recent years have caused the lake's level to drop, creating fears one of our most vital water sources could become contaminated. Winter rains affect the lake's level every day, and now Ynetnews allows you to join those people who must know the Kinneret's level by posting a daily, live update of the Kinneret's level. This being Ynet, of course, we have a little fun, too. The Flash animation features a rubber duckie floating on the surface of the lake as waves lap gently to and fro. Find the duckie on the News and Travel homepages.

Those kids today...

An Orthodox synagogue in Milwaukee is offering students money $150 to attend Torah study (Hat tip to "J" Weekly in San Francisco). Is this on top of what they pay the yeshiva kids who already read Torah on Shabbat in the synagogue? And why not give them pin money while they're in Israel on their free Birthright Israel trip? Sheesshh....

Soldier 'girls'

Yeah, I know, they're really women, but that's the way people talk here. There are "girl" soldiers and "boy" soldiers. Here's an interesting spread of photos of women in the IDF by photographer Ashkan Sahihi, courtesy of his gallery in New York, which had them on display until last week (Hat tip to blogger Clarity and Resolve).

3-D art

Interesting studies for 3-D computer image art by Tel Aviv artist Sharon Gefen. Separately, she maintains a very personal blog.

Battle of the Titans

Jewish "bigs" in New York duke it out. If you care.
