Mordechai Vanunu

Published: 03.28.05, 13:43 / Israel Homepage

Mordechai Vanunu (1954 - ) worked in Israel’s nuclear reactor at Dimona and leaked information and photographs detailing Israel’s nuclear capability to the British daily Sunday Times.

In October, 1986, shortly after the Times story was published, Mossad agents drugged and kidnapped Vanunu in Rome. He had been lured

to England by an undercover female Mossad agent who had started an affair with him. The Mossad needed to get him out of England because previously Israel had promised not to carry out intelligence operations in the country.

From Rome, the Mossad agents brought Vanunu to Israel where he was tried and received an 18-year prison sentence for leaking classified information and espionage. He served more than 11 years of his sentence in solitary confinement.

Vanunu was released from prison in April, 2004, but is subject to a number of speech and travel restrictions.
