Averbuch injury may stop pole vaulter from competing on Tuesday, but other track and field athletes will participate; Spitz and Krazyzelburg spend time with terror victims
Alex Averbuch, Israel's onetime European pole-vault champion, may not participate in the Maccabiah games Tuesday because of an Achilles tendon injury.
However, other quality athletes will participate in the Maccabiah's track and field competition, including Cyprian high-jumper Yanus Constantino, who will compete against Israel's Nicky Pally. Constantino's highest jump is 2.24 meters (7 feet 4 inches), and Pally's is 2.23 meters (7' 3 3/4").
Russian runner Masha Anekina, who won in the previous Maccabiah, will compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter events. Attila Farkas, who immigrated to Israel from Hungary and went back, will be representing Hungary on Tuesday night.
One of the best athletes who will participate in track and field Tuesday will be Stella Pilatou of Greece, whose best is 6.8 meters (22' 3 3/4"). Cyprian pole vaulter Anna Fitidou, who has a best of 4.4 meters (14' 5") will be an attraction as well.
