SOCCER (FOOTBALL)

Brazil's delegation to the 17th Maccabiah threatened to turn in their tags and leave Israel without participating in the closing ceremony, which will take place in Jerusalem Thursday.

The soccer semifinals game between Brazil and Israel was terminated Monday, when a Brazilian player shoved one of the judges for removing

another player from the game. The game was stopped in the 44th minute with Israel leading 2-1, and a violent riot broke out on the field.

The discipline committee suspended the Brazilian team from the rest of the games and ruled a technical victory for Israel Tuesday. Brazil's players did not accept the decision and decided to protest by saying they may leave.

Maccabiah officials made efforts to prevent a blowout, though it was clear the discipline committee will not reverse its decision.

"Naturally, the Brazilian delegation is unsatisfied with the decision to suspend their soccer team from the games," Maccabiah officials said in a statement. "Maccabiah organizers are not aware of the delegation's intention to leave the country before scheduled."

The soccer final, between USA and Israel will take place Wednesday. Israeli players Sagiv Cohen and Ori Bitton will not participate in the game because of minor injuries they incurred during the Brazil-Israel game.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Shai Doron, who led the American Maccabiah basketball team to victory over Israel in the final on Tuesday, was picked to be Most Valuable Player. Doron scored 21 points in the 78-53 game. Liel Ohanun led the Israeli team with 14 points.

A member of the Israeli Maccabiah chess team was arrested Sunday for possessing Hamas propaganda material, a Hamas flag and tear gas. He was released Monday. Since there are no rules about such occurrences in the Maccabiah constitution, the player will continue participating in the tournament.
