Israel Ports Company signs contract to begin construction on Carmel Port; companies involved can only hire Israeli workers

TEL AVIV - Israel Ports Company is scheduled to begin construction on the new Carmel Port near Haifa in the coming days, estimated at NIS 1.2 billion (USD 264 million).

The company signed an agreement Wednesday with A. Arenson Ltd who will act as contractor for the project's deep-sea infrastructures and development, valued at NIS 500 million (USD 110 million).

Company Director-General Amos Ron promised the project would offer work to hundreds of Israelis, as the companies hired to carry out construction are obligated to only hire Israeli workers .

Renewed pipeline from Iraq

The Carmel Port is one of the largest infrastructure projects at present, aiming to increase Haifa Port's capacity by receiving an extra 450,000 containers a year. The new port will include modern storage sites and a new 700-meter-long dock.

In addition, the port will also have a secondary 250-meter-long cargo dock equipped with advanced construction cranes, handling areas and large storage facilities.

Company chairman Dan Tichon said he is calling upon Jordon to broaden its use of the Haifa port.

“I’m hopeful that it is not far off and that Syria will use the port, “ he said at the ground-breaking ceremony. “I’m calling for the government of Israel to act to renew the pipeline from Iraq and to make the Haifa Port an additional origin for petroleum from Iraq.”
