New Dimona neighborhood: Neve Katif

New development in southern town will be called Neve Katif, in honor of Gaza Strip settlements, streets to be named after evacuated settlements; community leaders say they hope settlers will come and build new homes in the Negev town

The southern town of Dimona has decided to name a new neighborhood after Gush Katif.

Construction of some 200 homes is slated to begin in the next few months for a neighborhood to be called "Neve Katif." Neighborhood streets will be named after evacuated Gush Katif settlements.

Deputy Mayor Yossi Azriel suggested the name at the city council meeting.

Dimona hopes the move will offer some comfort to the residents of Gush Katif and perhaps even encourage and help them to move to Dimona. In recent days, 20 families from Gush Katif have begun talks with the Dimona municipality about moving there.

“The current reality proves that settlements in the Negev are strong,” Azriel said to Ynet. “We hope that some of the settlers will come here and build their new homes in the Negev.”
