MK: Evacuees have become refugees

Right-wing Knesset members call for resignation of Disengagement Administration Head Yonatan Bassi; say Gaza evacuees have become refugees after Administration has failed to find housing solution for settlers

Right-wing Knesset members slammed Disengagement Administration Head Yonatan Bassi Friday, calling for him to resign from his position, after they claimed the Gaza Strip residents have been left without a housing solution following evacuation.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee Yuval Steinitz and Deputy Knesset Speaker Moshe Kahlon were among those calling for Bassi's resignation.

Kahlon claimed the Gaza settlers have become refugees, without a roof over their heads. He also said thousands of children have been left without suitable schooling arrangements weeks before the new school year is set to begin.

Notably, the Education Ministry reported over the past few days that some 828 families have refused to contact the Administration to organize their children's schooling details for the coming year.

In response, Bassi told Ynet the Administration is available to help the evacuees and if needed, "to be their shock absorbers" and a place to dump their problem on.

"Those who were vacated from their homes are now undergoing a process of mourning their evacuation," he said.

Bassi: I'm here to assist the settlers

The Administration was required to find solutions in a short period of time, and did it out of concern that no one evacuated would be left without a roof over his head, Bassi said.

"Within three nights, 5,000 people were absorbed in 2,000 rooms at 30 hotels across the country, everyone has a bed to sleep in," he said. "Despite hitches here and there, I think we were able to rise up to this very difficult task placed upon us."

In response to the call for his resignation, Bassi said, "The prime minister appointed me, and as long as he is interested in my services - I'll be here."

"My job is to stand by the setters, as well as in the next year or so. I intend to stay, in order to assist them," he said.
