Palestinian army radio on the air

New station will be voice of Palestinian Authority security officials, hopes to compete with Hamas and Islamic Jihad-affiliated stations in the territories

A Palestinian army station will start broadcasting Wednesday morning. Al-Karama (voice of honor) will be the Palestinian equivalent of Israel’s Army Radio, and will initially broadcast 12 hours a day, according to the Palestinian Interior Ministry.

Interior Ministry spokesman Toufik Abu Husa told Ynet that the station will be headed by a Palestinian security officer, and that the station will be staffed by Palestinian security officials.

“The station will be one of the sources of Palestinian public relations, especially when it comes to general Palestinian security, and the citizen’s interest.”

“There will be programs that will give a platform to Palestinian security people serving far from their homes, so that they can be in touch with their families and friends,” said Abu Husa.

Since beginning his term, Palestinian interior minister Nasser Youseff has worked to organize and unify the Palestinian security forces.

In addition, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, acting on Youseff’s request, has instructed Palestinian security chiefs to refrain from being interviewed in the press without permission from Youseff.

Youseff also appointed Abu Husa as ministry spokesman, and the latter has been tasked with providing daily announcements on matters being deal with by the ministry, as well as responding to all security developments.

The new station hopes to compete with several local and popular radio stations in the territories, which include secular music talk shows and religious stations affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
