IDF snubs Rabin killer’s brother

Amitai Amir, brother of Yigal Amir, says he was interrogated by Shin Bet before being told he will not be enlisted for military service for time being

Amitai Amir, the young brother of late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s killer, was scheduled to join the IDF on Wednesday, but now says his enlistment was cancelled until further notice.

However, Yigal Amir’s brother says he is not sorry and prefers to stay out of the military.

“Three days ago I was called in for a General Security Service interrogation,” the young Amir told Ynet. “Among other things, they asked me whether I wanted to join the army and I said I prefer not to. It’s the army’s decision. If they decide to enlist me, I’ll join, and if not, even better.”

“In principle, the Shin Bet questioned me and wanted to see who I am,” Amir says. “They warned me that if I continue on the current path I could get into trouble. They were talking about people from the Right I hang out with, who they think incite me.”

The young Amir says authorities were also unhappy about some of his actions, including the infiltration of the evacuated West Bank settlement of Homesh and his participation in anti-pullout demonstrations.

‘I will leave IDF if there are more evacuations’

According to Amir, the Shin Bet’s interrogation is only a part of the agency’s plan to break the family’s spirits.

“It’s another layer in the persecution of the Amir family …in a bid to prevent the family from continuing to disseminate the truth regarding Yigal Amir’s rights and ideology. But we’ll continue with no fear,” he said.

Amir says that if he does not join the IDF, he will continue to yeshiva studies and then on to university.

“Of course, if during my service term there will be more evacuations, I will immediately remove my uniform,” he said. “Yigal supports me and agrees with me regarding my lack of motivation to enlist.”

Meanwhile, the Shin Bet and the IDF said they are looking into the enlistment of Amitai Amir and have yet to reach a final decision on the matter.
