Mines found on Sea of Galilee shore

Three police officer find mines on shore of Sea of Galilee; police estimate the mines were placed prior to the Six Day War when the area was under Syrian control

Two mines were discovered on the coast of the south-eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee Friday. No injuries were reported.

The mines were discovered by three police officers who had served in a police sapper unit in Gaza.

The men were vacationing with their families at the time.

Swimmers were evacuated from the area, and IDF sappers were called in to deactivate the devices.

Police estimate the mines are "jumping mines that could have caused serious injuries to people, even deadly."

"They were placed there prior to the Six Day War, when the area was under Syrian control. Even though the mines are old, they are still dangerous," one police official said.

Police sappers called in the IDF bomb squad to inspect the mines and its source. Following an examination, IDF sappers instructed police to blow up the mines in a controlled manner.

Tiberius police station commander Avi Algrasi said police forces evacuated the vacationers and closed off the area for fear of possible harm to people in the vicinity.

Most shores along the Sea of Galilee were crowded during the holiday period, but luckily only seven families chose to swim in the area where the mines were found.
