Peres offers Galilee benefits
New campaign aimed at boosting population of Galilee region, in northern Israel, offers tax breaks, grants
Vice Premier Shimon Peres called on central Israel residents to relocate to the northern Galilee region, which he characterized as “a beautiful region with immense potential in terms of quality of life, education, and employment.”
The comments were made during a tour in the area to mark the launching of a campaign aimed at boosting the Galilee’s population by offering extensive benefits to residents who decide to move there.
The project, the largest of its kind in the last 20 years in the north, includes 10,200 existing apartments on sale and construction in another 104 communities. According to Peres, “the government of Israel took a strategic decision to boost and develop the Galilee, and the Vice Premier’s Office advanced several significant economic decisions, led by investment in a road and train system, the encouragement of entrepreneurs, and discounts in residential land prices.
The benefits offered to draw new residents to the north include a 13 percent income tax discount and further discounts on municipal taxes in most communities. Some localities offer even greater discounts – in Kiryat Shmona, near the northern border, residents would pay 25 percent less income tax and also receive a NIS 25,000 (about USD 5,500) grant.
The communities taking part in the campaign include Tiberias, Karmiel, Beit She’an, Maalot, Nahariya, Nazareth Ilit, Acco (Acre,) and Afula, among others.
