Plan: National Service in outposts

Right-wing leader Arieh Yitzhaky drafts new initiative that would allow youths opposed to pullout to perform National Service duty in secluded West Bank outposts, settlements as alternative to enrolling in IDF. IDF postponed draft of five 18-year-old teens due to their involvement in violent clashes with security forces during disengagement

Right-wing leader Arieh Yitzhaky, who led the former Kfar Yam settlers’ battle against evacuation last summer, has been working on a new initiative that would allow youths opposed to the pullout to perform National Service duty in secluded West Bank outposts and settlements as an alternative to enrolling in the IDF, under the supervision of Land of Israel Faithful rabbis.

In early November Israel’s leading news source Ynet revealed that the IDF had postponed the draft of five 18-year-old teens who were scheduled to join the army over the next few weeks, on the grounds of their involvement in violent clashes with security forces and other illegal activities during the disengagement.

According to statistics collected by Colonel Amir Rogovsky, head of the Drafting Administration, more than a hundred teens are currently facing criminal charges or are under police investigation, for assaulting police and security forces during the evacuation of settlers from Gush Katif and the West Bank.

Last Sukkot the Youth for the Land of Israel movement got a head start on the project when its members erected five outposts in the West Bank.

“The teens are in a dilemma,” Yitzhaky said. “In light of what happened, many of them are angry and do not want to join the IDF, but on the other hand they do want to contribute to the country.”

According to Yitzhaky’s plan, the teens, both male and female, will undergo training in secluded outposts and settlements. Females interested in joining will be incorporated into education, welfare and health programs in the communities, while the boys will work in the science and computers fields.

Yitzhaky said those who will join the program (between the ages of 16 to 22) will receive a monthly salary of NIS 400 (about USD 85).
