IDF bulldozer goes AWOL

Military bulldozer weighing dozens of tons was apparently stolen from an army base located just north of the Gaza Strip and apparently taken to the West Bank Palestinian town of Qalqilya; IDF official: Incident a major embarrassment

A military bulldozer weighing dozens of tons was apparently stolen from an army base located just north of the Gaza Strip and apparently taken to the West Bank Palestinian town of Qalqilya.

The IDF has launched an investigation into the incident; an army official said the possibility that soldiers and Palestinians cooperated in the theft is being examined.

The bulldozer, which was used for construction works by the North Gaza Division, was parked at an army base by a standing army soldier. When the soldier returned three days later, he was amazed to find the bulldozer missing.

“This is a real mystery,” an IDF official told Ynet. “There was a major malfunction here. The vehicle was in an army base and simply disappeared. We are not talking about a two-way radio or a rifle; this is a bulldozer.”

The official said investigators received word that the bulldozer is now in Qalqilya, some 90 kilometers (about 56 miles) from the base.

“The vehicle belongs to a special General Staff unit, and its disappearance is a major embarrassment,” the IDF official added.

“Even if the theft was criminally-motivated, there was definitely a security failure at the army base, but it is also suspected that soldiers assisted in the theft, and this is very worrying.”

A few weeks ago a military dirt plow worth NIS 1 million (about USD 200,000) was stolen from an army base near Gaza; it was later located near Qalqilya.
