Landau: Sharon can’t represent Likud
Likud ‘rebels’ object to prime minister’s call for early elections
Likud “rebels” opposed to Ariel Sharon are already voicing their objection to the prime minister’s decision to bring forward general elections.
Sharon, who still hasn’t declared that he will not be leaving the Likud, "cannot represent the ruling party’s interests," Knesset member Uzi Landau said Thursday.
MK Ayoob Kara announced his intention to demand the party object to early elections, and added he was acting to "encourage the rebels not to cave in, in the face of (Labor party leader Amir) Peretz’s adventures.”
However, Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, who is currently visiting Tunisia, said quick elections would be the proper move.
"The prime minister and I reached a decision that there's no need to drag this thing out. A short election campaign will decrease tensions and be less wasteful," Shalom said on the last day of his Tunisia trip.
Meanwhile, Likud Knesset Member Ruhama Avraham slammed Peretz, saying the Labor Chairman "is full of himself. Leading the country is not like working with a little cash register at the Histadrut (Labor Union Federation,) which he led to a debt of NIS 1.4 billion.”
Peretz should "talk about real things, and not deceive the public with populist declarations," she added.
Meanwhile, the Meretz faction said it will not withdraw the no-confidence motion planned for this coming Monday, even if the Labor party asks that the motion be withdrawn.
However, sources at Meretz said they will be willing to discuss such a request if it is relayed in an orderly manner.
