Gaza evacuees protest in 'gold cages'

1,000 people gather in front of Sharon’s official Jerusalem residence Wednesday to mark 100 days since disengagement in framework of Yesha Council’s attempt to raise awareness of issue, better evacuees’ situation

Some 1,000 people gathered in front of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s official Jerusalem residence Wednesday to mark 100 days since Israel’s disengagement from Gaza and parts of the West Bank.

“100 days have past since thousands of Jews were placed in hotels, yeshivas and ulpanim (Hebrew language school),” former Gaza Coast Regional Council Head Avner Shimoni said during the rally, which was held in the framework of Yesha Council’s attempt to raise awareness of the issue and better evacuees’ situation.

Protesters, both children and adults, placed themselves in "gold cages” representing the hotels currently accommodating the evacuees, and held sign reading, “Locked up in a hotel for 100 days – did you (Sharon) banish and abandon as well? Where is the determination, and where is the sensitivity?”

During the demonstration a film was screened in which actors portrayed the prime minister and his sons, Omri and Gilad:

“Omri” said to his father, “Who are these people in the cages?”

“Sharon” replies, “Families that I banished this past summer.”

“What are they doing in the hotels,” “Omri” asked.

“Enjoying the summer,” “Sharon" replied.
