Prime Minister Ariel Sharon staunchly denied Wednesday reports that he supports a division of Jerusalem as part of a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

plan to divide Jerusalem," the prime minister said during a conference on the prevention of road accidents held at Tel Aviv University.

"I wish to stress one thing: Nothing of this is true. Jerusalem will remain undivided and under Israel's sovereignty," he said.

Referring to reports in the American magazine Newsweek, according to which Sharon did not object to a territorial compromise in the capital, the PM said "this is nonsense that should be taken off the agenda right from the start… others can talk, but I intend to make it happen."

Sharon also blasted political attempts carried out recently to postpone the elections.

"In recent weeks there
have been attempts to counter important moves because of personal interests. This probably characterizes the period before elections," he said.

"People slander instead of cooperating with the moves I have led to bring security, calm, welfare and peace. It's infuriating that some use political spins in order to try and prolong this period," Sharon said, seemingly hinting to the efforts to form a coalition of 61 Knesset members in a bid to dethrone him, appoint another PM and push back elections.
