Hebron compromise in works

Settlers, authorities working on deal that would see voluntary evacuation from Hebron market; meanwhile, IDF and police prepare for forceful evacuation

Leaders of the Jewish community in the West Bank town of Hebron and security officials are attempting to reach a compromise deal that would see the nine Jewish families currently residing in the Hebron market leaving voluntarily by Monday evening.

Security officials, on their part, will pledge to push forward legal procedures that started in the past and aim at renting the homes in questions for the benefit of Jewish residents.

The settlers' final answer is expected Monday morning.

IDF Central Command Head Yair Naveh signed 21 restraining orders against right-wing activists that according to intelligence information plan to hurt soldiers and police officers during the evacuation of the Hebron market, as well as the illegal outpost of Amona.

So far, police officers handed out 16 restraining orders.

In recent days, security officials met with Hebron community leaders in a bid to resolve the impasse. The meetings were undertaken with the knowledge of Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz.

IDF, police prepare to use force

Despite the compromise proposal, the defense establishment is preparing to use force, with thousands of police officers and soldiers set to take part in the evacuation that will begin Tuesday, should the settlers reject the compromise deal.

Security officials told Ynet that "the leaders of Hebron's Jewish community should accept the offer, because if it isn't accepted, we will cut off electricity and water and seal the houses. They will only lose."

The High Court of Justice on Sunday rejected a petition filed by residents of the illegal West Bank outpost of Amona, who asked the court to prevent a demolition of their homes.

Knesset Member Uri Ariel (National Union) moved with his family to Amona. He declared that he plans to struggle in the area in a bid to prevent the uprooting attempt at any cost.

"Olmert will do everything in order to seem strong and firm, even if the whole of society will pay the price," Ariel said.

Knesset members from right-wing factions sent a letter to Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and to Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra to demand forces taking part in any evacuation operate follow the procedures that heads of the security forces committed to.

The Knesset members mentioned in their letter that in light of past experience, there is need to make sure the forces use restraint and treat women, children and detainees in an appropriate manner.
