Hollywood producers to dispatch team to Israel, will investigate filming options

Ever dreamt of seeing Hollywood stars walking around Israel, and seeing Israeli landscapes featured in blockbuster movies? It could happen.

Later this year, a large contingent of Hollywood filmmakers is scheduled to visit Israel to investigate possibilities of shooting movies here.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel's leading daily, the visit was initiated by Israel's consul general in Los Angeles in an attempt to convince the American movie industry to shoot movies here.

Should the initiative bear fruit, it could spur tourism, improve Israel's image overseas, and contribute significantly to the country's economic health. Even low-budget Hollywood movies shot overseas "leave" tens, even hundreds, of millions of dollars behind with producers, service providers, tourism services and other industries in host countries.

The delegation will be comprised of representatives of some of Hollywood's biggest producers and studios, who are responsible for deciding where to film. During the week-long visit they will meet with government officials, who will present the economic advantages to filming in Israel.

The contingent will also visit sites with high movie potential, such as the Judean Hills The Galilee, the Hula Valley, the Negev Desert and Eilat. The group will also meet with representatives of the Israeli film industry, who will show off local innovations that will present Israel as a choice location.

For the past several months, Israel's consul general in Los Angeles, Ehud Danoch has held consultations with the finance and trade ministries to convince them to prepare a package of advantages to attract the movie industry to visit Israel.

The consulate has also approached the tourism ministry with a request to host the group and to partially fund the visit.
