Peres' bodyguard: Bedouin from Rahat

Farid al-Karenawi first Bedouin ever to became body guard of politicians, who praise his professionalism, modesty

A proud moment for the Bedouins: For the first time in Israel’s history a young Bedouin managed to obtain a sensitive, diplomatic, and highly regarded post. Farid al-Karenawi, 30 years old, from the Bedouin town of Rahat is the first Bedouin bodyguard of government officials in Israel.

Al-Karenawi, who is married with two children and the brother of Rahat's mayor, serves these days as the bodyguard of some of the most prominent politicians in Israel – among them Chairman of the Labor party Amir Peretz, and former Prime Minister Shimon Peres, second on the list of the Kadima party.

Al-Karenawi became a Knesset security guard six years ago, and a year and a half ago was one the initiators of the Oz unit, which was established to protect public officials who don't receive bodyguards from the Shin Bet.

Al-Karenawi is proud to be the first Bedouin bodyguard of political officials and his superiors are very pleased with him, saying that he is one of the most professional bodyguards. They also praise him as being very talented, and modest. He is especially appreciated by the staff of Shimon Peres, and by the former prime minister himself who brags about having a Bedouin bodyguard every chance he gets; last week he even bragged to Hollywood star Sharon Stone about the issue during her visit to Israel.
