Genealogy events in April

Events include an international conference on Jewish genealogy and a world congress of the Jews from Egypt

In Tel Aviv, learn about 18th-19th century Lithuanian bridging documents from expert Chaim Freedman, while in Ra’anana, those who are thinking about starting a project can attend a special introductory how-to session and use the JFRA reference library. In the Negev, IGS president Chana Furman will speak about her father’s family and, in Jerusalem, director of The Bureau of Children without Identity Lea Balint will speak on identity loss.

Chaim Freedman, author/genealogist

“18-19th century bridging records”

 

Freedman connects between Lithuanian documents from the 18th and 19th century in Lithuania. A researcher for more than 40 years, he specializes in rabbinic genealogy, and has authored several books, including Eliyahu's Branches, the Descendants of the Vilna Gaon and His Family (Avotaynu 1997) and many journal articles. The meeting is in conjunction with the IGS Lithuanian SIG.

Lea Balint, director, Bureau of Children Without Identity

“60 years of coping with identity loss during the Holocaust”

Balint spent part of WWII living under an assumed name in a Polish convent in Brwinow, near Warsaw. Her parents placed her there when she was 5 years old, and she emerged at the end of the war. Unusually, her father survived the war. After the war, she immigrated to Israel where she is director of The Bureau of Children without Identity, which attempts to help other Shoah child survivors trace their original identities and families.
