Peres: Abbas fears Iranian armament too

Vice premier reveals concerns PA chairman expressed during their meeting Sunday; Iranian threat is not just Israeli problem – every citizen of world should be concerned, Peres says

Israel isn’t the only country worried about the possibility of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. The Palestinian Authority as well, it turns out, is concerned about the day the ayatollah regime in Iran gets its hands on an atomic bomb.

On Sunday Vice Premier Shimon Peres met with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Sharm e-Sheikh, the first diplomatic meeting of its kind since Hamas assumed leadership of the PA. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and additional ministers also participated in the talks. Aside from extensive conversation of the situation in the Palestinian lands and the relevancy of the Road map peace plan, the issue of the Iran crisis also received attention.

Following the meeting, said Monday that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas also feared the possibility of Iran’s nuclear armament.

“Abbas told us, ‘We also can’t let Iran have nuclear weapons,’” Peres said Monday during a trade meeting in Tel Aviv. “The Iranian threat is not just an Israeli problem – every citizen of the world should be concerned,” Peres said.

“There is no escape. The whole world must organize on the Iranian issue, although I would figure the Iranians will take no heed anyway,” Peres said. “The problem of fanatical Islam is that they see themselves above all other people. The most dangerous regimes saw themselves as superior to others – that’s how it was with communism and with Nazism.”

The Iranian issue will take center stage during Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s visit to the United States this week. Olmert landed in Washington earlier Monday and is slated to meet with US President Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other top officials.
