Report: Jordan to return ambassador to Israel

Jordanian diplomat Ali al-Ayed to be appointed as Hashemite Kingdom's ambassador to Israel, London-based Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reports; Jerusalem said to have approved appointment. Deputy ambassador filling post for a year

After a year of boycott, Jordan decided to return its ambassador to Israel, the London-based Arabic daily al-Sharq al-Awsat reported on Monday.

According to the report Ali al-Ayed will be appointed to the post. The newspaper said Jordan is eager to return its ambassador to Tel Aviv in a bid to strengthen relations with the Jewish State.

Jordan hopes its diplomatic channels with Israel will help its government play more active a role in reviving moribund Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

The Jordanian Embassy refused to confirm or deny the report.

Jordanian sources told al-Awsat that Israel voiced no opposition to al-Ayed's appointment, adding that King Abdullah will officially inform Israel of the appointment during talks with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, scheduled upon Olmert's return from a visit to Washington.

Amman hopes al-Ayed, who previously served as Deputy Ambassador in Israel, will improve often troubles relations with Jerusalem.

Jordan's Ambassador to Israel, Dr. Maarouf al-Bahit, was lately appointed to the Head of the King's Office and Head of National Security Council.

Last November, al-Bahit was appointed prime minister.

In a letter sent on Sunday to US President George W. Bush, Abdullah warned that Olmert's convergence plan to withdraw settlers from isolated West Bank settlements could imperil the kingdom's security and destabilize the region.
