Palestinian sources in Jenin reported Thursday evening that Zacharia Zubeidi, a senior al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades leader in the town's area, managed to escape an army raid on a mourning tent in the Jenin refugee camp where he was visiting.
Eight operatives and guests to the tent were wounded during fire exchanges that developed in the place. Several wanted suspects affiliated with the Fatah movement were arrested. Five of the injured were evacuated to hospitals in Israel.
The army operation in town continues.
A rumor that Zubeidi was killed in the incident spread across the camp, but it could not be verified. A senior member of the Fatah's military wing told Ynet that "Zubeidi is in a safe location." According to the activist, the people injured in the raid were mostly visitors at the tent, and one organization member.
Among the operatives that managed to get away with Zubeidi was also Sheikh Mahmoud Saddai, the Islamic Jihad leader in Jenin.
The incident began after an IDF force besieged a house in the refugee camp, acting on intelligence stating that wanted suspects were hiding inside.
