Iranian exiles: Ayatollahs stirred Lebanon war
Website of Iranian opposition blames Iranian regime for Lebanon war, claims Iranian officials met Syrian counterparts on July 4 to discuss ways to stir conflict in region
Iranfocus.com, the Web site of the exiled Iranian opposition, reported Wednesday that the Iranian regime planned and initiated Hizbullah's cross-border attack against Israel on July 12.
Eight Israeli soldiers were killed and two were injured in the attack.
The website quotes "a well-placed source inside the clerical establishment" as saying that Iran dispatched a team of top officials to Damascus on July 4 to discuss plans to destabilize the region.
Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic, the Supreme Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Islamic Republic’s armed forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, secretly traveled to Damascus between July 1 and 6, the Web site said.
On July 4, the secretary general of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani made an unannounced trip to the Syrian capital.
A summit held at the Iranian Embassy in Damascus was attended by Syrian officials. The site claims it was during the summit that it was decided to order Hizbullah to prepare for an attack against Israel.
On July 11, Larijani made a second visit to Syria where he met Vice President Farouk El-Saraa after talks in Brussels with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana about Iran's nuclear program.
