Syrians thwart Israeli mangos delivery

Local customs officials find forbidden Israel-produced fruit on truck heading from Jordan to Damascus

Syrian newspaper Al-Thawra reported that local customs officials thwarted over the weekend an attempt to smuggle a large amount of Israeli mangos to Damascus.

According to the report, the customs officials waited at the Syrian-Jordanian border for a truck carrying fruits and vegetables from the Hashemite Kingdom; the officials found the forbidden Israeli fruit during a search of the vehicle and disposed of it.

A year ago the Anti-Normalization Committee of the opposition parties in Jordan, along with local labor unions, called on the public to boycott mangos produced in Israel and called on the government top prevent its entrance into the country.

“The fruit can be imported from Arab countries such as Egypt and Sudan and not Israel,” the committee said at the time. “Moreover, the Israelis use toxic pesticides.”
