Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra fired the commander of his military on grounds that he attempted a military coup.
Thaksin, participating in UN General Assembly in New York, declared a state of emergency in Thailand after tanks stormed the capital city, Bangkok, and blocked access to government offices. (AFP)
