AJC Israel pledges NIS 10,000 to Darfur refugees

Financial aid from Israeli chapter of American Jewish Committee will go to address basic needs of Darfur refugees in Israel, such as clothing

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) in Israel pledged to donate NIS 10,000 (about USD 2,400) to buy basic humanitarian supplies for Darfur refugees in Israel. Today there are some 300 such refugees, split into two refugee camps and waiting for a legal decision regarding them.

The refugees are in bad condition; many have spent months without basic supplies. The AJC in Israel responded to appeals by the Committee for Darfur Refugees in Israel to provide financial aid toward the purchase of preliminary supplies.

The Israel chapter's involvement comes in addition to extensive action on the issue by AJC chapters around the world, primarily in the United States.

ACJ Israel's Associate Director Rabbi Ed Rettig said: "The organization has allocated NIS 10,000 towards basic clothing needs and expresses hope that a humane solution, that respects the humanity of the refugees and expresses the high level of morality of Israel society, will be found."

Eitan Shwartz, a spokesperson for the Committee for Darfur Refugees said "the AJC's contribution is appreciated and extremely encouraging. Jewish organizations all around the world are among the leaders in the struggle to aid Darfur refugees."

"The Jewish people recognize their historical obligation to help survivors of genocide."
