Bill: Restaurants to offer Braille menus

MK Katz proposes bill stating that restaurant chains with 5 or more branches must have at least 2 Braille menus available

Tuesday, MK Haim Katz proposed a bill obligating restaurant chains with five or more branches to have at least two Braille menus available for the blind.

This bill is meant to serve the blind population in Israel, which is composed of about 25,000 people.

"The fact that most food chains don’t have Braille menus causes discomfort in the blinds' visits to restaurants, since they become dependant on their escorts or, alternatively, on waiters to read the menus to them. Some of them would even prefer to give up this experience and avoid going to restaurants because of this discomfort," said Katz.

Katz said that he is sure that having Braille menus would make it easier on the blind, and turn their visits to restaurants and cafes into more pleasant experiences.

This could be done at minimal costs and would not harm the restaurants' owners' income or profit.

Israel's National Restaurant Association's CEO Yosef Buznah, expressed his support of the bill and stated that this service to the blind is a very worthy service.

Adina Tal, CEO of the Nalaga'at (Do touch) Organization which cares for the blind and the deaf, welcomed the bill.

"I really hope that the business sector adopts this blessed bill and acts in favor of the customers with special needs," said Tal.

MK Katz added that "this bill will prevent the dependence of the blind on other people, when they are interested in going to any food chain to dine; they should also be able to enjoy their visit at the restaurant or café without feeling uncomfortable."
