VIDEO - "The shahid is one of our men who fell during a gunbattle with the occupation forces east of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza," proclaimed a flier distributed by the Islamic Jihad on Wednesday evening following the death of 24-year-old Ramzi Al-Zaanin earlier in the day. In the flier the group took responsibility for the attempt to plant an explosive device along the Israeli border fence as well as the detonation of two explosive devices against IDF forces in the region. Earlier Wednesday an IDF observation post alerted forces to the presence of three Palestinian gunmen attempting to plant a bomb near the fence north of the Karni goods crossing, a frequent target for Palestinian terror groups. Israeli forces entered the area and opened fire at the gunmen, killing Al-Zaanin. The gunmen returned fire and detonated two bombs against the forces, causing no injuries or damage. Palestinian officials charged that the IDF initially prevented Palestinian ambulances from reaching the scene to evacuate the wounded. The army said troops had briefly delayed the ambulances because they believed there might still be bombs concealed in the area. Palestinians also said that a second gunman was wounded in the exchange of fire and the third was arrested. According to the report the cell members fled the scene and escaped unharmed. The IDF denied any such incident. The Associated Press contributed to this report
