Claude Lanzmann to visit Israel

The film director, philosopher and journalist will be visiting Israel to attend conference on Jewish arts; he will be hosted at the Cinematheques where parts of his film 'Shoah' will be screened

Ahead of the Holocaust Memorial Day Cinematheques throughout Israel will be holding meetings with French director, philosopher and journalist Claude Lanzmann who will be visiting Israel to attend the Kisufim Conference focusing on Jewish contribution to culture.

The sessions will include discussions with the director and screening of the first part of his renowned film "Shoah." The first session will be held on Monday, April 16th at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Additional sessions will be held at the Jerusalem Cinematheque on April 18th, and in Haifa on April 19th.

Lanzmann's documentary "Shoah" was released in 1985 and is regarded as one of the most significant productions in the history of cinema. The nine-hour long film perpetuates the memory of the Holocaust with testimonies provided by survivors and former Nazis. Lanzmann does not try to revive the memory of the Holocaust by means of archival footage and materials but rather through first-hand memories of witnesses to the events.

Collection of the testimonies and Landsman's style of interviews turns the film into a horrifying portrait of the genocide carried out by the Nazis and shows that the anti-Semitism that led to the atrocities is still rampant.

"Shoah" was awarded several prizes including the French Cesar Award, the British BAFTA award, the Berlin International Film Festival Award and the New York Film Critics Award. The DVD package set to be marketed in Israel will for the first time include Hebrew subtitles. The film was shot in French, English and German.
