Poll: 17 is the right age to start
What is the right age to become sexually active? Survey of Israeli youths shows the consensus is 17
Dan Even
It seems Israeli teenagers are more conservative than one may think. Twenty-seven percent of them believe that the right age to start having sex is 17. Twenty-two percent are even more patient: They believe it is best to wait till 18.
The survey was conducted by Jansen-Silag, the manufacturer of a contraceptive patch, among 222 Hebrew speaking religious and secular teenagers ages 12 to 17.
Data collected shows that 1 percent of teenagers prefer to become sexually active before age 13. Two percent said the correct age was 13. On the other end, 1 percent indicated they would wait until they turned 21, and 2 percent until they turned 22.
The survey also found differences between young boys and girls: The average age selected by girls to start having sex was 17 and eight months, while boys preferred 16 and 10 months as the right age.
