Man injured while breaking into synagogue

Police dispatched to synagogue in southern town of Ofakim find man who allegedly tried to break into place but fell and broke his leg

A Dimona resident broke his leg Friday night while allegedly attempting to break into a synagogue in the southern town of Ofakim. He received medical treatment and was later questioned by police.

According to the suspicions, the man arrived at the synagogue at around 4 am and tried to break into the building through the roof. However, he slipped and fell from a height of 10 meters (32 feet) into the synagogue kitchen. He landed on a table and hurt his leg and back.

When the man discovered that he was unable to move, he was forced to use his cell phone and call the police and Magen David Adom rescue services.

Police and rescue teams were dispatched to the area and heard the man crying out in pain. Some of the police officers recognized him from previous property offenses and understood that he had apparently tried to break into the place.

The man was rushed to a Be'er Sheva hospital, where he received medical treatment. In his questioning he denied that he had tried to break into the synagogue, claiming that he could not remember how he got there.

According to the man, he went on a walk in Ofakim after quarreling with his wife, and suddenly found himself injured inside the synagogue.

Superintendent Yossi Farjun, commander of the Ofakim police station, told Ynet, "One could say that he experienced a work accident. He committed an offense of not keeping Sabbat, as well as the commandment 'Thou shall not steal.' The hand of God apparently stopped him on time."

Farjun added that the man was placed under a five-day house arrest following which he would be indicted.
