Jerusalem Mayor to award Yad Ezra VeShulamit for its exemplary volunteer activities

Mayor Uri Lupolianski will award Mr. Ariel Lurie, founder and executive director of Yad Ezra VeShulamit, the Mayor of Jerusalem's Citation for Volunteer Activities for 2007, in a ceremony at City Hall on 18 June.

The award serves as an acknowledgement of the organization's efforts during the Second Lebanon War, when Yad Ezra VeShulamit provided residents of northern Israel who sought shelter in Jerusalem with 1,000 hot meals a day.

Yad Ezra VeShulamit also organized a summer camp to help dozens of displaced children escape the trauma of the daily barrages of Katyusha rockets during the war.

Most recently, Yad Ezra VeShulamit has directed its efforts towards Sderot: Five trucks containing 20 tons of food and other supplies were sent to the city.

"Mr. Lurie works 24/7 to ensure that there is no hungry child in Israel," Mayor Lupolianski said in a statement. "Without receiving a salary or compensation, Mr. Lurie runs on love for his fellow Jew. We are honored to give credit and recognition to his self-sacrifice and dedication."

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, 18 June, at City Hall, and is open to the public.
