Orthodox protestors in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem rally against planned pride parade in capital. Protestors stone bus in Mea Shearim, passengers unharmed
Hundreds of haredim rallied in Beni Brak Thursday, in protest against the gay pride parade scheduled to take place in Jerusalem next Friday.
Protested stoned police forces and set dumpsters on fire. Earlier Thursday, dozens of haredim protested the parade, rallying in Jerusalem. Protestors set a few dumpsters aflame, threw garbage on the road and stoned a bus in Mea Shearim.
Police forces were called on the scene and rescued the bus. The passengers ware unharmed.
Jerusalem District Police Commander, Major-General Ilan Franco gave the Open House in Jerusalem the go ahead on the gay pride parade Wednesday. The parade will span King David's street down to the Hapa'amon garden, where a rally is to take place.
Some 7,000 police forces will secure the event.
Prior to the police announcement, hundreds of haredim protested the parade in Mea Shearim. Police forces stopped them from crossing over to the main roads and blocking them.
Wednesday night saw protestors set dumpsters on fire in the entrance to the city and in its neighborhoods, leading to four arrests. One police officer was injured when hit by a rock. Parking vehicles were damaged as well.
In wake of the Jerusalem parade's controversy, the first ever gay pride parade took place in Haifa Thursday. Some 300 participants took part in the march, which was largely uneventful.
