Ashkelon: Booby-trapped motorcycle explodes, man killed

Police suspect incident related to feud between criminals in southern city

One man was killed and another sustained serious injuries Wednesday when a booby-trapped motorcycle exploded in south Ashkelon.

The man who was killed, 33-year-old Arik Korkus, is known to police.

Police estimate that the blast, which occurred at around 11:50, was part of a feud between criminals in the city. It was initially thought that the explosion was the result of a Qassam attack.

Bus driver Yossi Keidar told Ynet he witnessed the explosion as he was driving along Shapira Street.

“I ran to help the injured – a man was laying there with burns all over his body. I was trying to help him until the medics arrived. Luckily my bus was empty,” he said.

Ilan Elmakayes, who lives in an apartment building nearby, said “we were sitting at home and heard a loud blast. I was certain it was a Qassam.

“I went downstairs and saw the motorcycle on fire. There was a lot of blood. It was a horrifying site,” he said.
