Hishtil opens first plant nursery in South Africa

Nursery will produce 200 million vegetable seedlings annually to growers in South Africa and neighboring countries; total investment $8 million

Hishtil Nurseries, the largest producer of vegetables, herbs and ornamental young plants in Israel, has opened its first plant nursery in South Africa. and will provide seedlings to growers in South Africa and (in future) to growers in neighboring countries.

Hishtil-South Africa is located in the nation's northernmost province, Limpopo, at the center of the vegetable producing regions.

Inauguration ceremony

In its initial phase, the nursery operates 1.5 hectare of greenhouses.  In the near future, it will expand its current site to 8 hectares.

With a total investment of $8 million dollars, the annual production, in several growing cycles, is estimated to reach 200 million seedlings. According to its business plans, Hishtil-South Africa will also establish more nurseries in the country, in various regions.

Based on techniques and know-how developed in Israel, Hishtil-South Africa intends to specialize in the production of grafted vegetable seedlings, a procedure that combines a variety of outstanding traits into one stock of plant.

When compared to regular seedlings, grafted plants exhibit robust growth, uniformity, and higher yields. Fields of grafted vegetable plants usually require less pesticide sprays thus contributing to a better environment. Hishtil's grafted seedlings include watermelons, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants and peppers.

The nursery

Hishtil-South Africa is the tenth nursery of the Hishtil Corporation and joins the five nurseries in Israel and the four nurseries in Italy (2), Turkey and Greece.

All the nurseries abroad are joint ventures with local partners. The South African partner of Hishtil is ZZ2, an agricultural company that grows 1700 hectares of tomatoes (close to the area of the fresh-market tomatoes grown in Israel), 500 hectare of onions, 500 hectares of avocado and more.

Hishtil intentions for future development are to amplify its involvement and production capabilities abroad and to access more international markets for its products.

The Prime Minister of Limpopo and the Israeli Ambassador to South Africa were among the dignitaries that participated in the inauguration ceremonies for the nursery.
