Hamas has authorized senior group members jailed in Israel to go into negotiations with Israeli officials on a prisoner exchange deal that would include the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Shalit was captured near Gaza last year, and has not been heard from until two weeks ago, when the organization holding him released an audiotape on which the soldier is heard speaking and pleading for Israel to promote his release.

According to the al-Halig newspaper, published in the United Arab Emirates, Dr Ayman Draghmeh, a representative of Hamas on the Palestinian Legislative Council, said that senior Hamas members held in Israeli prisons are running the negotiations.

Draghmeh told al-Halig that several meetings between the two sides had already taken place, and that the criteria for the deal and the identity of the prisoners to be included in the swap were left for the prisoners to decide on.

He added that Hamas demanded that Israeli Arabs and east Jerusalem residents would be included in the deal.
