IDF troops kill terrorist at West Bank checkpoint

Palestinian opens fire at soldiers manning checkpoint east of Tulkarm; troops return fire, kill terrorist

IDF soldiers manning a checkpoint east of Tulkarm on Thursday shot and killed a Palestinian gunman who opened fire in their direction.

A spokesman for the al-Quds Brigades, Islamic Jihad’s armed wing, said the Palestinian was identified as Muhammad Ziad, a 23-year-old member of the group.

The spokesman added that Ziad was supposed to carry out a terror attack at the checkpoint as part of the organization’s response to the killing of two of its members by IDF forces near Jenin earlier in the week.

The incident occurred at 5 pm, when infantry soldiers opened fire at a car that was speeding towards them and yelled at the driver to stop, but the car only gathered speed.

The Palestinian then stepped out of the vehicle and began firing at the troops with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. The troops returned fire and killed the terrorist.

Border Guard sappers dispatched to the scene found three bombs in the Palestinian's vehicle.

The IDF said an initial investigation into the incident showed that the soldiers acted appropriately and prevented a major terror attack.
