India: Israeli backpackers questioned over friend’s murder

Three Israelis taken in for questioning by Indian police as part of the investigation into murder of Dror Shek

Three Israeli backpackers have been taken in for questioning Tuesday by Indian police in the northern town of Kullu as part of the investigation into the death of their friend Dror Shek.

Shek was murdered by robbers last Sunday in the village of Kiriganga.

Israeli ambassador to India David Danieli told Ynet the questioning was part of routine police procedure, adding that he was working to release the backpackers as soon as possible.

Israel's consul to India, Rachel Yosepov, accompanied Shek's body to New Delhi; from there it will be flown to Israel on Tuesday evening.

During the night the Foreign Ministry informed Shek’s family members that a recovery team had arrived in the city of Kiriganga to retrieve his body.

“We know the terrain there is difficult and that the weather conditions are rough, so we were fearful the recovery team would not be able to reach the body,” Dror’s uncle said.

Shek's family said they were grateful to Dror's friend, Ran, who chased away the bandits after the murder and guarded the body. "If it wasn't for him – we wouldn't even have a grave to take comfort in," they said.
