Want to build planes that will crash into towers?

A model-airplanes manufacturer chose to use a nightmarish scenario to promote sales

In the battle for the consumer's attention, red lines are sometimes crossed. A company that manufactures jigsaw puzzles and model airplanes chose the September 11 terror attack on the World Trade Center as the inspiration for its campaign: Two airplanes crashing into the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv.

The brochure. Hebrew text reads: New! Learn how to build model-airpanes

The thousands of people who were shopping at Dizengoff mall on Friday had a chance to see how an Israeli 9/11 might look like. The brochure of "Puzzle-Land" features a photo of an airplane crashing into Azrieli round tower as a second airplane is seen approaching the second, triangular, tower.

Dozens of concerned citizens were bothered by the ad and called the company to protest the cynical use of the terror attack.

"At first I thought it was a bad joke," said one Tel Aviv resident, "when I realized it was an advertisement, I could not believe my eyes. Since September 11, many Israelis are haunted by the fear that such an attack will be repeated in Israel in the Azrieli Towers. It is sick."

A spokesman from the advertising agency that produced the brochure said in response: "In one of the drafts of the brochure, the photo was used as a joke. It was published by mistake and as soon as we realized that the wrong photo was used, we stopped distribution of the brochure."
