One Palestinian inmate died of wounds suffered in an Israeli jail riot and over a dozen were wounded after violent clashes on Monday with prison guards, 15 of whom were also hurt, a prisons spokeswoman said.

Following the incident, Palestinian organizations threatened to carry out terror attacks against Israel.

The violence flared when guards conducted a routine search for weapons in a tented complex housing 1,000 inmates in Israel's Negev desert, Eli Gabizon, commander of the Israel Prisons Service southern district, told Israel Radio.

The guards were hurt when prisoners hurled rocks and torched tents during the early morning search. The spokeswoman said the guards used only "non-lethal" means to quell the riot.

Palestinian member of parliament Issa Qaraqe told Reuters prisoners in Israeli jails would hold a one-day hunger strike on Tuesday to protest against the violence.

A senior member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, Fatah's military wing, told Ynet that the organization's members would reconsider their commitment to the truce and that they might carry out terror attacks in the near future.

According to the man, "The Israelis are taking advantage of our commitment to the truce and continue to abuse the prisoners and the civilian population. We will respond in full force and anywhere against these Israeli crimes, particularly against our prisoners."

Asked whether the attacks will take place inside Israel, he responded that the lives and the security of the Palestinian prisoners were considered a red line.

"If the Israelis cross this line and kill prisoners in jail, we are not committed to any red line as well. As far as we are concerned, any place can be targeted."

'The resistance factions will not stand idly by'

The Islamic Jihad's military wing also threatened to carry out terror attacks. The movement declared that the inmate's killing would not be ignored and that the organization would respond.

Talking to The Associated Press, sources in Hamas threatened to harm Israel through kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit. The Popular Resistance Committees threatened to kidnap more soldiers in a bid to ease the suffering of the Palestinian prisoners and bring about their release.

In Gaza City, about 300 demonstrators called for the release of prisoners. Nidal Saraffati, father of a 24-year-old man jailed in Israel, said the prisoners are subjected to regular abuses and their plight should unite all Palestinians.

"This is an attack on the family and the prisoners as well," he said. "We ask all the brothers to leave internal fighting behind. We have one common enemy."

Mushir al-Masri, a lawmaker with Hamas group, vowed revenge. "The resistance factions will not stand idly by and all options are open to us to face this dangerous policy," he said.

Both Hamas and the Islamic Jihad have killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide bombings, shootings and rocket attacks.
