Sports Committee hinders Motor Sports Act, again

Committee's fine tuning of 2005's act meets endless red tape; Israel only country in the world where engaging in motor sports is a criminal act

The Knesset's Education, Culture and Sports Committee postponed – again – its vote on the implementation of the Israel Motor Sports Act, Ynet has learned.

The Knesset passed the Motor Sports Act in 2005 and gave the various Knesset committees nine moths to work on the necessary regulation. The committees failed to meet the deadline and have been working on the act ever since.

As long as the act remains incomplete, motor sports of all kinds remain illegal in Israel, making it the only country in the world where engaging in motor sports is a criminal offence punishable by law.

The Education, Culture and Sports Committee was suppose to vote on two new regulations Wednesday – granting a sports driving license and granting a sports driving instructing license, but differences between the Defense, Transportation and Education Ministries as to the regulations' fine print caused the vote to be postponed – indefinitely.

Science, Culture and Sport Minister Raleb Majadele pledged to push for the implementation of the act when he took office, but so far he was unable to keep his promise.
