Peruvian authorities, in cooperation with official Israeli representatives in Lima, have begun searching for an Israeli who went missing three weeks ago some 1,300 kilometers south (about 800 miles) of the capital.

Authorities believe Asher Green set out on a journey near the city of Arequipa on November 4, and since then there has been no contact with him. His family turned to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, which then updated the embassy in Lima.

Local media have reported on the missing Israeli and published a photo of him.

Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru, after Lima, and is located some 2,300 meters above sea level. The city and its surrounding areas are considered a popular tourist destination.

Less than six months ago 11 Israeli travelers were injured in Peru when their bus overturned near the city of Nazca. At around the same time three Israeli trekkers were rescued after losing their way in a nature reserve north of Lima.
