Hundreds of millions of women, men and children are victims of racism, discrimination and systematic abuse. International Human Rights Day aims to remind us not to take human rights for granted
"All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights… Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status." (The United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
December 10, 1948)
What do a 22-year-old Russian student who "disappeared" in 2003, a Chinese follower of Falun Gong who was sent to a "reeducation" camp, a spokesman for the Vietnamese farmers' association arrested two days after his election, an Iraqi woman who was executed after complaining of police brutality and over 1,000 political prisoners in Myanmar have in common? They are all victims of human rights violations whom Amnesty International is
trying to help.
