Fatah officials interviewed by Hamas TV

Senior Fatah officials in Gaza tell rival faction's television station unity needed in face of 'Israeli escalation'; 'IDF weapons do not differentiate between our organizations, they say

Hamas’ Al-Aqsa television station aired on Friday interviews with leading Fatah officials in Gaza, this despite the rift created between the factions following the Islamist movement's violent takeover of the coastal strip last June.

Earlier on Friday, Fatah leader and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his demand that Hamas relinquish control of Gaza, saying the group "destroyed and tries to destroy our dreams, future and national aspirations."

Ibrahim Abu al-Naja, one of the Fatah officials who took part in the broadcast, was arrested by Hamas security forces two weeks ago and was forced to shave off his beard and mustache. He spoke during the interview of the need to form a united front and resume talks between the rival Palestinian factions in the face of Israel's ongoing attacks in Gaza.

Al-Naja and fellow Fatah official Ahmed Hilas said during the broadcast that the "Palestinian blood being spilled is the blood of people from both Hamas and Fatah" and that Israel's weapons do not differentiate between the two organizations.

Next to be interviewed was Jibril Rajoub, the former head of the Preventive Security Service in the West Bank who until a few years ago was considered a bitter rival of Hamas. He too called on the factions to unite in light of the "Israeli escalation".
