Russian tennis sensation Maria Sharapova easily defeated Israel's Shahar Peer 6:1, 6:1 in their Federation Cup quarter-finals match on Sunday.
Peer (ranked 17th in the world), who has never beaten Australian Open champion Sharapova, looked to the 5,500 fans who packed the Ramat Hasharon tennis stadium for support, but the world no. 5 was just too much for her to handle.
Sharapova's victory put Russia 2-1 up in the tournament after she beat Tzipi Obziler 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday. Anna Chakvetadze's 6:4, 6:2 victory over Obziler on Sunday ended Israel's Federation Cup hopes.

An irate Peer said following the match "Maria told me that I should have learned the lesson from Yesterday (Sharapova's win over Obziler) – I don't think she's supposed to say such things, but that's her problem.
"I tried my best until the last point. I fought and the crowd helped me, but to no avail. She won the crucial points and that's why it ended the way it did," the top Israeli tennis player said. "The game was closer that what the final result shows."
