London’s famous underground railway system can now boast a new Israeli talent. Hadar Manor,
an Israeli singer currently residing in London, won top honors this weekend in the Ear To the Underground contest,
featuring musicians and artists performing in the British capital’s renowned "tube".
Manor won 5,000 British pounds (about $9,833) in prize money, as well as the chance to perform in a live London concert sponsored by the Capital 95.8 radio station.
The 29-year-old Israeli singer has lived in London for the past six years, and, like other local talent, began to perform in the city’s underground train system
Performing in London’s "tube" is no simple feat, however. The London municipality requires such underground artists to undergo stringent auditions and to be represented by a talent agency. Manor, in fact, was recently asked by the London municipality to help audition new talent for the underground.
Manor also performs above ground, incidentally, and can be often be spotted performing in many of London’s local nightclubs, and launching various musical projects throughout the city. Now, however, she is indeed tops at the underground, beating out a wealth of local talent and garnering some much needed exposure for her unmistakable talent.
During her years in England, Manor also served as a warm up act for renowned Israeli singer Ehud Banai during a London concert.
“He told me that 30 years ago he was standing exactly where I am right now, just singing his songs. Nobody could have convinced him that 30 years later someone else would be standing in his place singing his songs,” said Manor.
“It’s been a long, uphill road to get here,” said Manor, “but it was all worth it just to experience all the love, e-mails and messages that I received from people both in London and across the world. It was absolutely heartwarming and inspiring."
