Peres: We shall overcome

President says Israel will overcome rocket attacks just like it prevailed over suicide terrorism

Eternal optimist: Addressing the ongoing rocket attacks in the south, President Shimon Peres said Tuesday that he believed Israel would overcome the latest challenge to its security.

"We overcame suicide terror attacks, we overcame the thousands of rockets that landed in the north, and I believe we will also be able to overcome the difficult situation that prevails in Sderot, Ashkelon and the Gaza region these days," Peres said.

During his visit to the northern town of Nahariya, Peres stressed that national solidarity was needed in order to help southern residents overcome the tough period.

"The residents should know that they are not alone, that the people are behind them and with them," said the president. "We will be able to overcome the difficulties through this solidarity and through the IDF's operations." He also stressed that army operations in the Strip should be undertaken while avoiding innocent casualties on the Palestinian side.

During his tour of the northern town, Peres was briefed about reconstruction work in Nahariya in the wake of the Second Lebanon War. The president noted that there was no sign of the 600 rockets that landed in town and around it during the fighting.

Later, Peres met with Karnit and Shlomo Goldwasser, the wife and father of Ehud Goldwasser, the IDF reservist abducted by Hizbullah in July 2006. Peres, who is expected to travel to France soon for a series of diplomatic meetings, said he will raise the issue during his trip.
