Shin Bet workers' secret lives revealed

Looking to boost manpower recruitment, secretive organization allows four of its workers to publish blogs describing their experiences at unusual workplace

The Shin Bet, one of the most highly secretive security organizations in Israel, has recently joined a popular internet trend by launching personal weblogs written by its employees.

As part of its manpower recruitment efforts, the organization has allowed four workers from its information system department to share personal accounts of their experiences as Shin Bet employees, without exposing their identities of course.

H, a QA engineer and the only female blogger on the new site, describes in her blog her experiences as a mother at a predominately-male workplace. "A friend told me about the opportunity to work for the Shin Bet. I was looking for a place that offers interest and stability, while leaving time for me to spend with my family," she writes.

According to H, some of the greatest difficulties connected with the position lie in the inability to share details of her work with her husband or friends.

'Office is not underground'

Meanwhile Y, an infrastructure integration expert, writes in his blog about the good life at the Shin Bet, compared to the demanding life as a high-tech worker. "You never work overtime, unless you really have to. I rarely get home after 6:30 pm."

Y admits that unlike the high-tech world, his current job provides zero chance for becoming a millionaire, but adds that the satisfaction he derives from handling Israel's security challenges makes up for this.

A, a software engineer, uses a much lighter tone to describe his work at the general security service. "I don't wear uniform, the office is not located underground, I don't walk around with an earplug all day long, and although this is extremely unfair, I do not get to place ligtbars on the roof of my car. This post will destroy itself in 10 seconds."

According to the Shin Bet, surfers will be able to respond to the posts and the bloggers will answer questions regarding their work, without revealing sensitive security information.
