Israeli Consulate in New York, students from various Jewish schools throughout US hold Purim rally in support of Sderot
The Israeli Consulate in New York hosted a rally for Sderot on Thursday, in order to show support for the Qassam-battered city on Purim, the most joyous of Jewish holidays.
Children from 30 schools throughout the United States read the megilla alongside Sderot’s residents via online conference, bringing the town’s resident some much needed holiday cheer; taking the time to try and understand just what life is like in Sderot, under the constant threat of rocket attacks.
Before the joint online megilla reading, Sderot students answered questions raised by their American friends, who were greeted by Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal.
The American pupils also received special instructional kits from the consulate teaching them about the situation in Sderot.
David Saranga, Israel’s Consul for Media and Public Affairs in New York, who organized the unique event said that “this is only one in a series of events that we had planned to create a sense of unity between Sderot’s residents and the Jewish community in the US, and to bring the city’s plight to public awareness.”
Benjamin Krasna, Deputy Consul General in New York, also noted the importance of unity during this difficult time in Sderot’s history. “Just as Queen Esther rounded up all of her fellow Jews in order to present a united front against the evil Haman, so we, too, are rounding up America’s Jewish youth to show a united front with their friends in Israel during this holiday.”
The joint megilla reading took place in the main synagogue in Sderot, and can also be accessed online.
